Taking the first step to nurture your mental health or to find someone who can for your loved one is a big decision AND task. With many mental health professionals out there, finding the right one for you can be puzzling. As you sort through the "alphabet soup" behind each clinician's name, I hope to offer you the easiest way to sort through it all. Below are the acronyms denoting a clinician's level of education and experience.
Bachelor's level college degree and experience: most clinicians with a bachelor's degree are LCDCs, BSW, or counselor interns working to become fully licensed in Texas. LCDC stands for Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor specializing in substance abuse. BSW is a bachelor's level social worker. NOTE: Texas does NOT license a bachelor's level clinician to have a private practice. Bachelor-level clinicians work in agencies or under the supervision of a state-licensed clinician.
To add to the mix are Life Coaches. Life Coaches have a credentialing process independent of the state of Texas mental health licensing process. Life Coaches are just as effective for many clients; however, we encourage you to research. CLICK HERE for more information on Life Coaches.
The next level of credentialing is......
Master's degree and experience, which includes a Bachelors's degree plus two years or more of education and experience: at this level of education, have acronyms such as LPC, LPC-S, LMSW, or LMFTs. For a more detailed explanation, CLICK HERE.
Then you have......
At the top of ALL college degrees, credentialing and experience include the following:
Ph.D. and PsyD. These clinicians have the highest level of education. A doctorate combines a bachelor's degree plus a master's degree plus two or more years of schooling. Most doctorate-level clinicians are specialists within an area of focus. CLICK HERE for more detailed information.
